A flam is a note (series of notes) written ahead of the main beat and takes on the effect of a grace note. The original TR-707 only allowed flam strikes on the snare and toms. The 7×7-TR8 Drum Machine Expansion allows you to program a flam strike on any instrument of any kit and control the flam spacing.
To program a flam, hold down the TR-REC button in TR-REC mode and press the programmed step. The pad should be lit purple.
To specify the spacing, hold down the TR-REC button again and turn the TEMPO knob. You can choose no flam (0) and spaces 1-8.
Hold down the instrument button (BD, SD, …) you want to adjust the levels for and turn the tempo knob. (min: +-24db max: +24db)
Select a pattern.
Hold down PTN SELECT and turn the tempo knob to change between Locked and OFF
Hold TR-REC and press A or B.
Hold TAP and press START/STOP
If you look at the 16-step sequencer, you will see Steps 12 – 15 marked ROLL. You can add either an 8th or 16th roll or two variations of fills to your pattern in real-time performance. To play rolls and fills, select INST PLAY MODE, hold down the roll or fill you want and strike one of the eleven instruments from Step 1 -11
If you are in TR-REC mode, you can clear the notes that are programmed in the TR-8 by holding CLEAR while the TR-8 plays back to delete specific notes in an instrument’s sequence.
In INST PLAY/REC mode you can delete entire note patterns by holding the CLEAR button and pressing one of the instrument buttons. (you can also hold the instrument button and push CLEAR).
In PTN SELECT mode, you can delete entire patterns by holding a pattern button and pressing CLEAR.

Press the START/STOP to save the settings and reboot the TR-8 in Normal Mode.
The pads 1-7 have specific functions when in setup mode:
|1||MIDI Clock source||Clock is derived either via MIDI or USB. USB has priority||Clock is internal|

The TR-8 has two assignable outputs along with the main ones. Any combination of the instrumts can be set to use the outputs. This means that some additional external effects, say, can be used on selected instruments.

A refers to ASSIGNABLE OUT A. Press and hold A and select the instruments to be routed via output A. Release the A button and the the instrument LEDs will return to show the main output routing. Any instruments that have been changed to use the assignable outputs will no longer show as lit when neither button A or B are pressed.
